The Department Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine at the Grand Rapids, Michigan campus is seeking a Research Assistant I. This is an entry-level position for technical support in a basic/translational biology laboratory studying reproductive tract development and disease under the direction of the principal investigator or his appointee. The successful candidate must have a good understanding of standard molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture techniques, although other skill sets will also be considered on an individual basis in order to perform experiments and analyze data for research projects. Documentation of laboratory procedures and results and experience with standard computer software are required. Good command of written and spoken English is a determining factor. RA will consult with research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments. Compiles and summarizes results and participates in preparing reports, manuscripts and articles for publication. RA will act as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding research projects and experiments and oversee the compliance to laboratory safety regulations and procedures.
The laboratory is a collaborative environment; therefore, employee must be able to interact with others to further the goals of the principal investigator. The work will be performed in laboratory setting and will involve low-level exposure to caustic, flammable, and otherwise toxic chemicals. Failure to follow proper safety procedures could result in physical harm to the employee and others. This job can be physically exhausting, requiring long periods of standing at a bench or sitting at instruments requiring focused periods of attention. Collection and transport of biological specimens requires short outdoor walk to nearby institutions.
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Women's Health; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical techniques in Women's Health; may require software specific to the area of research; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Practical experience with basic molecular laboratory skills is a plus but willingness to be trained will also be considered. Bioinformatics experience is also a plus.
